Venn Diagram Maker

Paste two lists and this Venn diagram generator finds what they share, writes every item into the right region and sizes the circles to match. Two, three or four sets. Free, no account, PNG, JPEG or SVG.

How to make a Venn diagram

  1. Name the two sets and type or paste one item per line into each list. A column copied from a spreadsheet works, and so does a comma-separated line.
  2. Items that appear in both lists move into the overlap on their own. You don't place anything by hand.
  3. Press + Add a set for a third or fourth circle.
  4. Download as PNG (2,400 pixels wide, transparent if you set the background to Transparent), JPEG or SVG.

Matching ignores capital letters and extra spaces, so "Fur", "fur" and " fur " are one item. Under the diagram, Copy the overlap as text gives you the shared items as a list.

Three ways to fill it in

ModeYou typeUse it for
ListsThe items of each setComparing two real lists: ingredients, job requirements, class rosters, playlists
CountsA number for each regionSurvey results and probability problems. The union and intersections are worked out under the diagram.
LabelsThe text of each region yourselfCompare-and-contrast worksheets, slides, and blank diagrams to print

Meme mode hides the lists and shows only the set names and one big label in the middle.

Two, three or four circles

Two circles have 3 regions, three circles have 7, and four sets have 15. Four circles cannot make all 15 (try it: at most 14 appear), which is why a four-set Venn diagram is drawn with ellipses.

Three sets: "water" is the only item in all three lists.

Four sets as ellipses. Ana can come every day.

Venn diagram or Euler diagram?

A strict Venn diagram shows every possible overlap, even the empty ones, with circles of equal size. An Euler diagram shows only the overlaps that exist and can size the circles by how much is in them. Most "Venn diagrams" in reports are Euler diagrams.

Chartty draws the Euler kind by default: with Size circles by count on, each circle's area follows the size of its set and the overlap follows the number of shared items. Two lists with nothing in common are drawn apart, and a list that is entirely inside another is drawn inside it. Turn the option off for equal circles that always overlap.

Sized by count: 30 and 66 people, 12 in both.

The same numbers with equal circles.

Sizing is exact for two sets. For three sets the circles are fitted pair by pair, which is the best circles can do: three circles cannot match seven arbitrary numbers. When sizing by count would make one of the seven regions vanish, the diagram falls back to equal circles and says so. Four sets are always drawn at equal size.

FAQ

Can I make a 3-circle or 4-circle Venn diagram?

Yes. Press + Add a set once for a three-circle Venn diagram (7 regions) and again for four sets (15 regions, drawn as ellipses). Four is the limit.

How do I type text into the overlap?

In Lists mode you don't: put the item in both lists and it is written into the overlap for you. To write the overlap by hand, switch to Labels mode, where every region has its own text box.

Are the circles sized to the data?

Yes, when Size circles by count is on, which is the default in Lists and Counts mode. Circle areas follow the set sizes and the overlap follows the shared count. It is exact for two sets and a best fit for three.

How do I use it as a Venn diagram calculator?

Switch to Counts and type the number in each region, for example 10 only in A, 20 only in B and 5 in both. Under the diagram you get A ∪ B = 35, A ∩ B = 5 and the size of each set (15 and 25). The union follows the formula |A ∪ B| = |A| + |B| − |A ∩ B|: 15 + 25 − 5 = 35.

Can I download a blank Venn diagram?

Yes. Switch to Labels mode, leave the set names and region boxes empty, and download. Add a set for a blank three- or four-set diagram. The PNG is 2,400 pixels wide, enough for a full printed page.

How do I put the Venn diagram into PowerPoint or Google Slides?

Set Background to Transparent, download the PNG and insert it as a picture: it sits on any slide color. PowerPoint also accepts the SVG, which stays sharp at any size and can be converted to shapes there.

Is it free and do I need an account?

It is free and there are no accounts. No watermark, no limit on downloads. Nothing you type is uploaded.

What is the difference between a Venn diagram and an Euler diagram?

A Venn diagram always shows every possible overlap between its sets, including empty ones. An Euler diagram leaves out overlaps that don't exist, so circles can sit apart or one inside another. Turn Size circles by count off for a strict Venn diagram.

Can I make a Venn diagram with lines for writing?

No. The regions are either filled with your text or left empty. For a worksheet to write on by hand, download a blank diagram in Labels mode.

Why do my items not match?

Usually a spelling difference: "color" and "colour", a trailing "s", or a full stop. Capital letters and extra spaces are ignored unless you tick "Treat 'Fur' and 'fur' as different". Everything else must be the same, character for character.

How many items fit in one region?

About 12 at full size. Past that the text shrinks, down to 8 pixels, and the editor shows a note. When a region still can't hold its items, the last line reads "+N more".
